Bezeichnung University Building for the Beta Sciences Faculty
Herausforderung Construction of a new building with a complex architectural design

To bring a faculty that had previously been housed in various buildings under one roof, the administrative board of the University of Utrecht decided to construct a new building with a complex architectural design.

Designed by the Dutch Hertzberger architecture studio, the striking new building houses various scientific disciplines together under a huge open atrium. The atrium is topped by a large glass structure to create a striking landmark.

The ability of SGB to provide a genuinely comprehensive combination of products and services for the construction industry was clearly demonstrated by this project. In addition to a fully comprehensive formwork, shoring, encapsulation, mast climbing work platform, suspended and powered access, scaffolding, staircase & edge protection package, we also provided the largest rolling roof of its type ever to be used in the Netherlands.

To form the concrete frame of the building, a total of 14,500 m² of formwork equipment was required. For this we supplied 65,000 m³ of GASS® aluminium towers ranging from 2.50 m to 7.50 m high to support the ceiling slabs. 2,500 m² of MANTO® large-frame formwork and shaft corner systems were also used for the rapid, economical creation of lift shafts. Safety protection for all work was provided by our EXTRAGUARD™ edge protection system.

But the most challenging and impressive part of the project was the rolling roof which shielded the site from the weather so that construction work could remain on schedule. The roof was designed to be opened and closed by the on site scaffolding team during the construction work so that materials could be craned into the building. Towards the end of the project, we also raised the 1,446 m² roof by an extra storey to create sufficient space for the final construction stage to take place.
